On Thursday, 17 September, KHS Kapa Haka and Polyfest students visited Annaliese Haven Rest Home to perform for residents in both general and dementia care. The visit gave students a meaningful opportunity to give back to the community, build intergenerational connections, and gain insight into how specialised care homes operate.
Preparations began early at 5:15 am, when Whaea Geri and Matua Nathan started the hāngī, followed by performance practice at school. The kai was lifted at 11:30 am, after which the rōpū enjoyed the meal, with apple crumble for dessert.
During the visit, our Year 12, Kaitātaki Tāne, Dayton Haare, spent time with Matua Ivan (Ngāti Whatua), a permanent resident in the dementia unit. Matua Ivan engaged warmly with the performance, singing along and joining in with the movement. Dayton shared that it was a special privilege to entertain and honour the kaumātua of the community.
