Karanga Mai

Young Parents’ College

Karanga Mai Young Parents’ College was the first teen parent school in the South Island, and the second to be established in New Zealand.

We’re incredibly proud of this programme and of the young parents who continue their education with us.

Karanga Mai has an excellent record of achievement and works closely with other services in the community, including WINZ, Plunket, budget advice and counselling.

How do we support students at
Karanga Mai?

\

We give them the opportunity to study and gain qualifications at secondary and tertiary levels, with help from qualified teachers.

\

We provide a programme of group activities for personal development, parenting, recreation and fun.

\

We have an onsite, licensed child-care centre with a diverse and personalised programme for 0 to 5-year-olds.

\

We work alongside other community services to provide social work support, help with career planning, and access to other services like budgeting advice, Plunket and WINZ.

\

We provide an opportunity to meet and make friends with other young parents.

\

We can help with transport to and from College if needed. The Training Incentive Allowance may cover transport costs.

Here’s what former Karanga Mai

students told us:

Karanga Mai

“My world has opened. I am achieving so much, far beyond my expectations. I can never thank my teachers enough for their complete encouragement and devotion just to see us succeed.”

“I have never attended secondary school before, but when I came to Karanga Mai I achieved NCEA Levels 1 & 2 gaining over 100 credits in one year, passed my restricted drivers licence and I won the Clayton Cosgrove Cup!”

“Karanga Mai has also aided in the quality of my parenting. From advice from the childcare teachers to being given the opportunity to hear guest speakers, like Plunket, I am confident I am doing a good job.”
