Surfwise is based at Waikuku Beach in North Canterbury and has been supporting people of all ages to access the ocean’s transformational potential through surfing since 2017. Alongside learning to surf, participants are encouraged to connect meaningfully with one another and the natural environment.

A small group of students was invited to join a new programme this year called Shimmer – ‘Shining with a soft wavering light’. Through the use of the ocean and surfing contexts, participants were challenged to explore their capabilities. They were encouraged to push their comfort zones and recognise their potential in ways that transfer to everyday life. The ocean teaches us all kinds of transferable skills and provides the perfect backdrop to ‘try’ new ways of being and doing.

We were lucky enough to experience three fully funded sessions on a Monday morning during March with Surfwise owner and teacher, Tammi Martin.  Andy Macfarlane, our school counselor, also helped as he is a surf lifesaver.  A big thanks to these great people and to the following students who pushed beyond their comfort zones: Brianna Morris and Pippa Fletcher in Year 11, Jaxson Paap, Will Campbell, Emma Savage, Denver Hebden, and Zach Robinson in Year 10. Also, thanks to Will’s whanau who took some awesome photos to remember this positive experience.
