Term 4 has had a busy start for sport.

We have seen an increase in team numbers, which is awesome to see. Our Junior Volleyball teams are competing in the inter-school competition after running skills sessions in Term 1. We have nine teams playing on Monday nights, including our senior teams.

On Wednesdays, we have teams playing Football 5-aside, Touch, Tennis, Small Bore Shooting, and Canoe Polo, with Archery on Thursdays after school. On Fridays, Korfball is played at Nga Puna Wai, and we also have nine teams involved, showing that this sport is continually growing in our school. It’s exciting to see some new faces trying out these sports this term.

Over the holidays we had students representing our school or their representative teams at National & Regional tournaments. Well done to all of our students and their teams that competed.

Basketball Nationals

Our Senior Girls’ Basketball Team had an outstanding week at the Secondary Schools’ Nationals in Palmerston North the first week of the school holidays achieving an impressive 11th place finish in the country.

Over six days, they played eight hard-fought games, winning four and losing four. This was the third consecutive year the team has qualified for Nationals, and this year they secured their highest-ever finish with their most wins to date. The girls were competitive in every game with no game lost by more than 10 points.

This team is not only talented on the court but also a fantastic group of girls off the court, creating lasting memories and building strong friendships. We were so proud of their effort and the way they represented KHS. It was an awesome achievement.

RESULTS:

KHS v Mt Maunganui – 71-81 L

KHS v Queen Margaret – 67-72 L

KHS v St Mary’s – 73-60 W

A special mention to Aliyah Newton and Terongomaianiwaniwa Williams, our yr 13s in the team who have been exceptional leaders. They will be deeply missed next year, both on and off the court. A BIG thank you to Coaches Josh Shaw & Matt Newton for all the time and effort you have put into this team.

MTB Nationals

Well done to our students Sophie Jolly, Hayden Inch & Caleb Duffy who represented our school at the Secondary Schools’ MTB Nationals held at the Christchurch Adventure Park during the last week of the school holidays. They competed strongly against the best school riders throughout NZ in the following events held over four days:

Caleb Duffy  – U20 Boys – Cross Country (XCO)

Hayden Inch – U20 Boys – Cross Country (XCO) + Enduro

Sophie Jolly – U16 Cross Country (XCO), Enduro + Downhill

Cycling Road Champs

Brodie Chapman yr 9 represented KHS over three days at the Secondary Schools’ National Road Champs held in Timaru, competing in the Road Race & Points Race events. This was the last cycling school event for this year and Brodie has represented our school travelling all over the South Island to compete which is a great effort.

Rugby 7s – Senior Girls

Our Senior Girls got the chance to get out on the field playing 7s Rugby. The girls played five games, enjoying the fast-paced game, and they played so well. Unfortunately, due to school commitments, as it was the last week of school for our seniors, we were unable to play in the Connor 7’s qualifier, which was a shame. Hopefully, this opportunity will come again in the future, as we had a competitive team.
