Year 10 Digital Technologies
Level One Technology - Hard Materials

Year 11
Hard Materials Technology is a one year option course that builds on both the design processes and practical skills developed during Year 9 and 10. To be successful, students will need to be self-motivated, take pride in their work while exercising safe workshop practice.
Students should have a good grasp of the design process, be familiar with basic graphics techniques including rendering, orthographic drawing and correct dimensioning of an object.

Assessment: Throughout the year students have the opportunity to achieve 19 Level One credits toward NCEA.  The Unit Standards are BCITO (Building and Construction Industry Training standards). There are five units of work in total as outlined below.

The Programme:
Unit Standards:
Our primary focus is to empower each student to achieve each of the Unit Standards listed above. This relies on the Unit Standards being completed in conjunction with associated project work.
Practical:
While the practical projects may vary from year to year with the students being introduced to different tools and equipment, our focus is a combination of  ‘The Design Process’ and the development of practical skills and knowledge such as:

Safe workshop practice:

Appropriate conduct that promotes safe use of a workshop along with successful outputs. This includes the safe use of drillpress, bandsaw, welding equipment, metal folder, guillotine etc

Processes:

Develop processes that enable logical and efficient use of resources; eg. time, materials, teacher resources.

Setting out:

Accurate marking out of components including correct use of associated hand-tools.

Use of hand-tools:

Correct use of hand-tools including saws, square, chisel, marking gauge, hand router, hammer, mallet, file, centre etc.

Materials:

Gain some understanding of the characteristics of the materials they are using along with appropriate uses, strengths and weaknesses.

Outputs:

Produce a quality product that meets the criteria of the brief and is fit for purpose.

The design process:

Brief:

identify a need

Specifications:

identify and discuss

Research / Investigation:

source examples of similar solutions to the brief

Concepts development:

develop a range of concepts that may meet the brief

Design development:

take a selected design and modify to find a solution that best fits the specifications

Final design:

develop drawings, required documentation etc. of preferred solution to the brief ensuring it meets all specifications.

Production:

manufacture final design.

Evaluation:

evaluate outcome according to final design documentation.
