   Year 10 Fashion Design

Year 10
Fashion Design Technology is an option course that runs for one semester. The course builds on both the design processes and practical skills developed during Year 9. To be successful, students will need to have a sound grasp of the Year 9 Technology programme, have good work habits that enable peer collaboration and focus on processes and outputs. Most of all a keen interest in the subject is required.

The Units:

The Introduction:

Overview of the requirements for the units. Fashion drawing is covered here.

Funky Fleece Hat:

Given brief: You are given the opportunity to produce a hat for a specific purpose e.g. ice skating, skiing, a spectator at a rugby match, hiking, fancy dress headwear.

P.J Pants:

Given brief: You are to make some pyjama pants for either winter or summer.

Bags and Carriers:

Given brief: You are to design and make a storage holder with a specific purpose.

The primary focus is always ‘The Design Process’ with the secondary focus being the development of practical skills and knowledge such as:

Safe workshop practice:

Appropriate conduct that promotes safe use of the equipment in the fashion room, along with successful outputs.

Processes:

Develop processes that enable logical and efficient use of resources; e.g. time plans, flowcharts, and teacher resources.

Setting out:

Planning work carefully, carrying out research and using information technology.

Use of machinery:

This includes the safe use of the sewing machine, irons and over lockers: including the understanding of the functions and application of each.

Materials/inputs:

Gain some understanding of the characteristics of the materials they are using along with appropriate uses, strengths and weaknesses e.g. properties and identification of natural and man-made fibres including recycled.

Outputs:

Produce a quality product that meets the criteria of the brief and is fit for purpose.

The design process:

Brief:

identify a need

Specifications:

identify and discuss

Research / Investigation:

source examples of similar solutions to the brief

Concepts development:

develop a range of concepts that may meet the brief

Design development:

take a selected design and modify to find a solution that best fits the specifications

Final design:

develop drawings, required documentation etc. of preferred solution to the brief ensuring it meets all specifications.

Production:

manufacture final design.

Evaluation:

evaluate outcome according to final design documentation.
