LEVEL THREE OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Course Overview

This course leads on from Level 2 Outdoor Education.

The course aims to further develop the application of risk management concepts, competence in a range of activities, an appreciation of the natural environment and our impact on it, and provide opportunities for adventure and challenge through a supportive group environment.
The major modules are:

 Risk management
 Kayaking
 Weather & Navigation
 Rock climbing
 Tramping
 River Cross

This course involves 4 trips: Kayak trip in Term 1 for 2 days and three tramps (3 days each) during the year. Students in this course work towards NCEA level 3. The unit standards within this course can be used for University Entrance (UE) as both the Tramping and Rock Climbing are worth 14+ credits in one domain.

Unit Standard 20160 - Weather - Demonstrate knowledge of weather processes and their effect on NZ weather for Outdoor Recreation - Credits: 2

Unit Standard 428 – Tramping - Demonstrate on-track tramping skills for multi night tramping - Credits: 14

Unit Standard 424 – First Aid - Respond to an emergency care situation for an outdoor activity - Credits: 5

Unit Standard 20150 – Rock - Demonstrate rock climbing skills on nature rock - Credits: 5

Unit Standard 20155 – Rock - Demonstrate Lead Climbing on bolted rock climbing routes on natural rock - Credits: 2

Unit Standard 427 - Tramping - Cross Rivers - Credits 2
