   Outdoor Education
Kaiapoi High School is ideally situated on the east coast of the South Island, just north of Christchurch. Kaiapoi High School makes use of a diverse range of environments from snowy mountain ranges, native bushland, rocky crags, white water rivers and the sea.

Kaiapoi High School won The Education Outdoors New Zealand (EONZ) Award for the “Best Outdoor Education programme in New Zealand” in 2003.

The Adventure school at Kaiapoi High School offers a number of difficult courses for senior students. Kaiapoi High School has sfrito accreditation to Level 4 and all courses are assessed using unit standards. Kaiapoi High School has three specialist Outdoor education teachers with Unit standard and NZOIA qualifications. We use the Boyle Outdoor Education Centre (Winner of the Best Outdoor Centre in New Zealand, 2004) and a number of qualified Outdoor Instructors to help deliver our programmes. We have a close association with Christchurch Institute of Technology and Polytechnic.

Outdoor education is offered at three levels.

LEVEL ONE OUTDOOR EDUCATION

This course aims to develop cooperation, goal setting, social skills, environmental awareness, risk management and teamwork through a range of outdoor experiences.

The major modules are:
Adventure based learning
Bush craft
Tramping
River crossing
Mountain biking
Navigation
Orienteering
Rock climbing.

This course involves a 3-day camp (two school days and one weekend day) and at least two day tramps during the year (a weekend day). Students in this course work towards NCEA level 1 and the Sfrito National Award in Outdoor Experiences

LEVEL TWO OUTDOOR EDUCATION

The course aims to develop awareness of risk management concepts and their application, competence in a range of activities, an appreciation of the natural environment and provide opportunities for adventure and challenge through a supportive group environment.
The major modules are:

Risk management
Kayaking
Weather & Navigation
Rock climbing
Snow craft
Environmental issues
This course involves 2 camps:
Kayak camp in Term 1 for 5 days.
Snow camp in Term 3 for 5 days.

Students in this course work towards NCEA level 2 and completing the Sfrito National Award in Outdoor Experiences.

LEVEL THREE OUTDOOR EDUCATION

This course leads on from Level 2 Outdoor Education.
The course aims to further develop the application of risk management concepts, competence in a range of activities, an appreciation of the natural environment and our impact on it and provide opportunities for adventure and challenge through a supportive group environment.
The major modules are:

Risk management
Sea Kayaking
Weather & Navigation
Rock climbing
Tramping

This course involves 4 trips: Sea Kayak trip in Term 1 for 5 days and three tramps (3 days each) during the year. Students in this course work towards NCEA level 3.

Leadership training is offered at two levels at Kaiapoi High School. These are both 4 period a week year-long courses that involve leading junior students in the outdoors.

LEVEL TWO LEADERSHIP

This course aims to provide students with leadership training and leadership opportunities. It involves learning skills in communication, leadership, risk management, bush craft, facilitation, feedback and practical skills in outdoor activities and initiatives.
Students complete

A six week First Aid course (6-8pm on Mondays in Term 2)
4 hours per week study within the school timetable
A “learning to lead” camp in Term 2 (5 days).
A “being a camp leader” camp in Term 3 (5 days).

This course involves 2 week long camps. Students in this course work towards NCEA level 2 and the Sfrito National Award in Risk Management.

LEVEL THREE LEADERSHIP

This course extends the leadership teaching provided in Level 2 Leadership and gives further practical opportunities with leadership of Kaiapoi camps. Decision making, planning, the weather and risk management are key areas. Connections are made with the community and a mentor is provided.
This course involves 2 week long camps.
Students in this course work towards NCEA level 3 and completing the Sfrito National Award in Risk Management.
